Montana Cross Country \u201cT\u201d Association<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1961<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ford Model T was voted the \u201cCar of the Century\u201d which was an international award given to the world’s most influential car of the 20th century. The election process was overseen by the Global Automotive Elections Foundation with a narrowed field of 200 cars. The winner, the Ford Model T, was announced at an awards gala on December 18, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Montana Cross Country \u201cT\u201d Assn. is dedicated to rebuilding, refurbishing, preserving, and proving stock Ford Model T\u2019s. In some cases, members fully restore these cars to a \u201cnew car status\u201d in most every aspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Assn. also allows the above Model T\u2019s that meet written safely requirements to be endurance-tested at their annual runs. The Montana 500 is sort of a proving ground for the owner, engine builder, chassis builder, and electrical systems builder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We highly recommend that you get yourself a Model T and join these endurance runs. Expect to have some old school (or new school) fun. It is a friendly helpful atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Active Membership includes all the privileges of the Association including issues of the Montana 500 Newsletter. Annual dues are $10 and entitle the member one vote at meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you all for attending,\nhelping, and supporting me with the Montana 500.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special thanks to Rick and Char Bonebright for working behind the scenes with route selection, hospitality, and the banquet.   Many of you were a great help to me in my first year of Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you Dennis Powers leading the Model T inspection and collecting signature forms.  Thank you, Matt Hansen and Russell Hanna, for sealing up the cars.  Great job!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two new drivers and a returning driver from 50 years ago participated this year.  Kim MacLeod and Matt Hansen were the new drivers and Tim Craig from Pasadena ran the 500, 50 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2017 Route Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day one.<\/strong>  Leg\n1.  <\/strong>Headed West from Missoula on I-90\nto St. Regis. Exit 33 right.  ~68 miles.  Gassed up at St Regis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day one.<\/strong>  Leg\n2.  <\/strong>Then Hwy 135 North for ~21 miles,\nturned right at Hwy 200 Jct.  Went ~24 miles\nbut through Dixon, turn left on Hwy 212 to Charlo.  ~13 miles.  ~58 miles total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day one.<\/strong>  Drive\nfurther to lunch:<\/strong>,  Toured from Charlo\nand ate Lunch in Ronan.  Acquired gas and\nreturned to Charlo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day one.<\/strong>  Leg\n3.<\/strong>   Left Charlo on Hwy 212, went\n~13 miles.  Right on Hwy 200 West through\nDixon.  Went ~33 miles, turn left onto\nHwy 135.  Drove ~21 miles to St. Regis\nfor gas.  ~58 miles total.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day one.<\/strong>  Leg\n4.<\/strong>  Headed East on I-90 for 68\nmiles.  Used Exit 101 to return to My\nPlace Hotel-Motel.    Total miles day 1 ~ 256.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2.<\/strong>   Leg 1.<\/strong>  Drove from Missoula to Butte, ~115\nmiles.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2.<\/strong>   Leg\n2.<\/strong>  Drove from Butte to Missoula\n115 miles, ~ 230 miles total.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3.<\/strong>  Leg 1.<\/strong>  Drove from Missoula to Drummond, 50 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3.<\/strong>   Leg 2.<\/strong>  Drove from Drummond to Missoula 50 miles.  ~ 100 miles total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Stormo was doing just fine when his car began to slow down. See hole in #2 piston and two holes in #2 cylinder of the low head. A chunk of the head\u2019s cast iron is near the pliers. No known cause or verdict known for sure yet. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 1: Gary Ebbert had a coil failure and lost about 5 minutes of down time.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 2: Janet and Russell drove off route to Hot Springs on the Charlo leg. Close to 18 extra miles and probably gave up 25 minutes. Tony drove passed the turn to Charlo but recovered quickly. Nan\u2019s engine broke an aluminum Chevy valve retainer about 32 miles from Charlo but only gave up about 8 minutes of time limping in with 3 cylinders functioning.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 3: Mike Robison missed a turn to St. Regis, but recovered soon.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 4:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 5: Bill Mullins lost a coil box contact tang under time; fixed it and later on a 2<\/b><\/span>nd<\/b><\/span><\/sup> tang broke off. Down time about 30 minutes.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 8: Stormo lost a coil box tang. Down time about 5 minutes.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leg 10: Stormo\u2019s engine crushed a hole in the top of #2 piston and subsequently the head punched out or vise versa. This time Stormo did not return his car to the run. The event happened about 25 miles away from the final finish line.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Tony Cerovski was awarded the Bud Peters Award for 2017. However, Tony gave his Bud Peters Award trophy to Kim MacLeod to acknowledge her proven gusto! Afterward the meeting, Tony discovered a set of wood bands in his truck. Janet told Tony that he received a set of wood bands from Jim Guinn as a recipient of the Bud Peters Award. Jim is the owner of Guinn Bands in Yorba Linda, California. Thank you Jim!<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Kossor, inventor-seller of the E-Timer and the Electronically Cranked Coil Tester (ECCT), donated $250 for the award banquet again this year. Another supporter of the Montana 500 since 2003 is Tom and Suzie Carnegie at the Antique Auto Ranch. They donate time and web space for our Montana 500 History, rules, notifications, race results and more. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, to the winner of the 2017 Montana 500: Dennis Powers won it after years of trying. Congratulations Dennis, you are the one to beat nest year! <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
